    Another 1st to Kerala - Banking facilities in all Villages

    Kerala is the proud first as far as the Saaksharatha (complete literacy) in the entire country is concerned. Other states are struggling to fulfill full literacy in their states. Now Kerala is another first in India.

    Kerala has become the first state to have banking facilities in all of its villages. The State Government jointly with the State level Bankers' committee took a decision to provide at least one of the banking services like a branch office, an ATM, Mobile Banking facility or correspondence banking. The decision is fully implemented by now.

    In a function organized at Thiruvananthapuram, the C M Oommen Chandy announced this in the presence of the K C Joseph, Minister, Chief Secretary, the Canara Bank Chairman Reserve Bank Regional Director etc. He further announced that the next aim is to make Kerala a Nirmala Kerala, that is make Kerala free of all garbage.

    Kerala is getting the distinction in several areas. Not only that the banking facilities are available in villages, many of the villagers are making use of it. Because of the insistence that the labour charges under the 'National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme' are to be distributed through banks, those engaged under the scheme have opened Bank accounts. Thus the system of banking is getting a base in Kerala villages.
