Mullaperiyar dam issue, alternate solutions suggested

Constructing a new dam is not the only solution to solve the Mullaperiyar dam issue according to Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishat (KSSP). In a discussion held at a meeting attended by scientists and experts two other suggestions than construction of a new dam are made.

1. Lower the water level in the dam to a particular level, release the water that accumulates above it from time to time through tunnels to Tamil Nadu where it could be stored for future use. It would mean maintaining the existing dam as a backup dam and entrusting responsibility of storing water to Tamil Nadu.

2. Collect water from the Mullaperiyar reservoir in the Idukki dam and divert it to Tamil Nadu through tunnels to be constructed for that purpose and de-commission Mullaperiyar dam in a phased man
