Dr.Varghese Kurien, the milk man is no more

A great son of Kerala, Dr.Varghese Kurien who is known as the 'Milk Man of India' or 'Amul man', died yesterday. Though born in Kerala he lived at Anand (Anand is now the milk capital of India) in Gujarat where he developed the co-operative society of milk producers. This created a revolution, known as White Revolution, in milk production in the whole country. Amul has become a brand name for milk.

Basically a mechanical engineer he started his career as a dairy production engineer with the Gujarath Government. Later he resigned the job and ventured the formation of milk cooperative societies. It created a noticeable change in the milk production in the State and later in whole country.

He got recognitions from all sources. Government of India honored him with Padmashree, Padmabhushan and Padma vibhushan. He was awarded Magsaysay award for social work also. He had received international recognition such as Food award, Award for Peace, etc.

Let us pay tributes to this great man.

By the death of Krishi Ratna, Padma Vibhshan Dr Varghese Kurien, the father of white revolution in India, the Indian Milk man and Amul founder, our country India and the State of Kerala lost a 'Ratna'. When the co-operative movement was just beginning he with his mentor Tribhuvandas Patel of Kaira Dst cooperative founded the first ever cooperative movement in milk production. This was when the country on the one hand had to import milk power and butter (Polson brand)and on the other we had cattle (cows and buffaloes) in plenty but mostly non productive or under productive. Mr Kurien was posted there as an engineer but had no work and was about to resign and move out. At that time Patel came in contact with Dr Kurien and persuaded him to resign and join the cooperative movement. After that there was no looking back for Kurien. Patel being a politician had no time. So single handedly the burden was borne by Kurien. He underwent necessary trainings and educations in diary industry and established a most modern diary in Anand under brand name "Amul'. He was so successful that the Gujarat government suggested him to expand the movement in entire Gujarat. Later the then PM L B Sastry made his o work similar projects in all the states. India which was importing huge quantities of milk and milk products became self sufficient and was even able to export. He was a model or example of how one could serve one's country in whatever activity one is in. Unfortunately there are very few such great sons of the country. May his soul rest in peace.

The man who pioneered the white revolution and bathed in milk the state of Gujarat ,land of Lord Krishna , being taken to the paradise the day after India celebrates the Birthday of Lord Krishna(the cattle herder incarnation of Lord Vishnu), Janmashtami. This was a fact that fascinated me the most. What could have possibly been a better date for him to pass away? Seems like a divine intervention , a great blessing from Krishna , a token of love from God himself.

Thank you Gayathri for this information. I did not notice that the day of Dr. Kurien's death was the Janmashtami day. Good coincidence !!

Everything becomes magical when we believe there is nothing called as 'coincidence'. It happens because it was meant to be and often things happen because the universal soul, the ultimate truth wanted it to be so. Like i said, "a divine intervention".
