150th birth day of 'King' of Malayalam language

Today, 20th February is the 150th birth day of the great literary doyen A.R. Rajaraja Varma who is known as 'Kerala Panini' and also as the 'Thampuran' (King) of Malayalam. He was the person who codified the grammar of Malayalam prose and poem following the path of Panini, the grammarian of Sanskrit language.

Rajaraja varma was born on 20th February, 1863 at the Lakshmipuram Palace at Changanasseri as the son of Vasudevan Nambudiri and Bharani Thirunal Amma Thampuratty. He took his degree in Chemistry and went for Post graduation in Sanskrit. He took his M.A. In Sanskrit with first rank in the University. He served as the Principal of Sanskrit College at Thiruvananthapuram.

He has to his credit 22 books in Sanskrit and 21 books in Malayalam, which include the famous Bhashabhooshanam, Vritha manjari and Sahitya sahyam. He died on 18th June 1918.
