Kerala is the poor or rich state. Comment

KERALA is a poor state in a poor country. Yet its people have a quality of life that is better than the rest of India or almost any other low-income state. In
fact, the quality of life in Kerala is closer to that in the West. Comment.

Its absolutely right that kerala had developed when compared to other states, in some sectors. When overall development is concerned, Kerala is in a good position. But in some sections like corruption and minority-women rights, Kerala is 'well developed'!!!! If these are changed and the politicians and beurocrats aim social development than their pocket development, Kerala should have reached more heights..Also our policies for Industrial and agricultural developments should also be changed...Agriculture should be given higher priorities and Industrial development should be done with great social and natural concerns.New projects should be implemented by concerning social benefits but not the pocket development of politicians.. If we change our policies,, we can surely achieve great heights.

Thomas Cherian i thought you will respond to this thread and you have done with apt reply. Two points which you have raised is a issue to ponder over. Minority women rights and agriculture were neglected by this govt and your post demand this attention. And politicians are pocketing the wealth to the utter dismay of the people.

Kerala is rich in culture, literacy, politics and above all alcoholism. But Kerala is not rich in wealth and size. She is like a lean, poor woman, living in a posh building. What is the status of Industrial growth of our State compared to our neighbouring States ? Look at the roads of our neighbours like Tamilnad and Karnataka. What we lack is planning and determination. The tax that we may is being mishandled by each Govt for their own selfish motives. At our cost, ruling party wants to aggrandize their party only and none of them see the welfare of the masses at large. All types of dirty activities are in plenty in the State and day by day, the number of crimes are increasing to such an extent that the present force in Police department become inadequate. The richness in Alcoholism in our State is one of the reason for the current status. The quality of life of ordinary people in Kerala is not good. The new generation should wake up and force the ruling party to tow to the diktait of the common man's voice. A new Kerala is not impossible.

Sreekumar Nair it seems you have got into the root cause of Kerala past. Well i am not in Kerala and what ever you say i take it granted. But what i could understand that there is no Industrial growth in the state. How come this govt always supports labour class and no Industry which is unable to digest. And alcohol consumption is high in the state and you say that is a debacle.

Kerala is one of the richest state,no one can say that kerala is a poor state.Kerala is one of the fastest developed states in kerala.Kerala would have been much better if the political leaders were overthrown and their BANK accounts were ransacked. The wealth of kerala is in the hands of corrupt ministers who have stolen lot of money meant for poor and needy,if that amount can be restored the poor people will also have a better life .Their standard of living will be increased .

The politics of kerala should change for it to become a really rich State.

Manu your thoughts are very good and implementation is very difficult. Those Ministers who have looted or in the looting spree will never forgo their earnings to the benefit of the poor. They came to politics to earn and not to forgo. But we have the power to tame them. Throw them out in the next election and make this view very firm.

Mohan sir it is not difficult to implement, first of all the people should gather together which does not happen, when the common people stand together for a cause these ministers are nothing .Most of the people think of these ministers as someone great when they make a development of 10 lakhs in a particular place unknowing that the minister has already stolen about 25 percent of the project, which was for the development.Even such small thefts by the minsters should be made public and they should be dismissed from service.Once a minister has been caught in any scam he should not be allowed to become minister in future.

You were mentioning about throwing them out in the next election.Throwing out this government in this election and bringing the other party to rule makes no difference. The candidates have become so confident of getting a seat as they make some develepment during the first 2 weeks and then start looting the public. This has to be stopped ,the common people should stand out against the whole bunch of ministers and bring a new bunch of ministers who should be educated .

Manu it seems you have gone deep into the root cause of this post and i really appreciate your concern for that. This practice of Ministers is happening elsewhere in the country. They show some sort of developments and gets cut of their share in every respect. That is why i am insisting that new breed of educated lot must come to the politics and weed out the old rotten lot.

    Hello

I am satisfied with Mr. S K Nair that Kerala is rich in culture, literacy, politics and above all alcoholism. But Kerala is not rich in wealth and size. Kerala(Keralam) is a state of India, located south most on its west coast. It was created on 1 November 1956. The state has an area of 38,863 square km. Kerala is a popular tourist destination famous for its backwaters, Ayurvedic treatments and tropical greenery. Main tourist destinations of Kerala include Alappuzha, Bekal, Bharananganam, Guruvayur, Idukki, Kannur, Kochi, Kottayam, Kovalam, Kozhikode, Kumarakom, Malayattoor, Munnar, Parumala, Peermade, Sabarimala, Thekkady, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Varkala Wayanad and Sasthamkotta. Kerala's culture is derived from both a Tamil-heritage region known as Tamilakam and southern coastal Karnataka. Kathakali and Mohiniattam are widely recognized Indian Classical Dance traditions from Kerala.

Kerala is rich in resources. But people are very often not prepared to make use of these resources in a sustainable manner. Kerala has already shown that the quality of life can be improved even if it is a poor state. Nobel Laureate Dr.Amarthya Sen, referring this phenomenon as 'the Kerala Model' has presented it before the world.

Production level had not shown much of an increase and also there was (even now it is there) a tendency to convert the agricultural fields to other cash crops and for construction purposes. At the same time there was a struggle for better wages among all categories of employees. Agriculture expenses became too high and the ordinary farmers felt it was better to sell the rice fields and go for other jobs. People started to go to gulf countries and the number of such people increased to several fold.

Thus Kerala became a state where a good number of family started depending on Gulf money for their living. They were not contributing much to the production sector of the state. This phenomena continued which made the average Keralite rich without working inside the State.

Kerala had the advantage of high literacy and social movements, which attracted people towards the left movements. Their rule in the State made the Public Distribution System a success.Nowhere in the country this system worked so neatly (later it also started deteriorating). Similarly the public health facilities were also highly made use of by the people, which was a result of high literacy level.

The life expectancy of the people increased due to the increased health facilities. Similarly the child death got reduced. Education helped people think of small family units.

Now the attention from all these are changing and the Kerala model is fading out. This is mainly due to the change in the attitude of the people. Everybody wanted immediate cash (that too in large quantity), for which they are prepared to go to any level. Exploitation of Nature to their advantage, without thinking how it is going to affect the next generation, has become a routine thing.

The answer to these issues are none other than concentrating on sustainable production activities.
