Now the celebrations of Onam begins...
Today "Atham" Now 10 days to Thiruvonam
The festival of flowers begins. Every malayalee welcomes it with a prosperous hope. The nature tells now that we are still the naadan Malayalee with great traditional values. Pookalam is now a competition item in schools, colleges, government offices etc. Other than that only Arts club make pookalam in onam season. But still i am happy because I saw a fantastic pookalam infront of my neighborhood house. I congratulate them for making such a beautiful pookalam.

The pookalam used to start on the Chingamasam 1st in the olden days. From the day of Atham nakshtram day along with pookalam, there used to be 2 matheris (mathevars) in the center of the pookalam. Matheri is mud form like pyramidal structure to some extent. The base of the structure will be about 3 to 4 square inches and the top will be about 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches square. The height will be about 1 foot to 1 and 1/2 feet. (see below the article).

In those days flowers were not at all a problem. Every house com pound will have enough flowers. It is the season for Ash guard (Kumbalanga) and Mathan (pumpkin)and the creepers will have lot of flowers which will not have the fruits. These in bright yellow colour will make 2 or 3 rounds of the pookalam. This is also the season for the Kasi Thumba with different colours of flowers. Then there are so many other variety of flowers in the season which will all be used for the pookalam. It will be a beautiful si8ght to watch.

Now the flowers in the houses are rare as there may not much compound area to the houses because of the population increase and the division of the land to the expanded families. Purchase of flowers is costly. So the number of days of pookalam is reduced and start fro m Atham day only.

These 10 days in Kerala is a time for enjoyment. People of all ages will be happy to take part in these events. Every people creates a Pookalam in front of their house. Students will create Pookalam in Shool and Colleges as well. 10 days will be days of flower festival.

Onam days are here, which is highlighted by Atham celebrations.

The famous Athachamayam at Tripunithura was held yesterday. Though heavy rain was pouring down thousands people participated in it. Several attractive art forms, like Kathakali, Theyyam, Thiruvathira kali, etc. participated in the procession.
Also students from various educational institutions dressed in uniforms and colourful get up were there. Vehicles with different tableau and persons attired as lions, leopards, SreeKrishna, etc. also added attraction to the procession. But the rain was so heavy and all were forced to cut short everything.
Three of the State's Ministers were present to witness the Athachamayam procession.
