Papaya recipes: The perfect accessory for Onam

Introduction


Papaya is commonly known as Kapalanga/Ommakka in Kerala. It's commonly cultivated in America. It grows very fast and fruiting within four years. It is usually grown by sprinkling the seeds. It's very easily available in our backyards.Thus we can get this fruit without using any chemicals or pesticides. Papaya dishes are very suitable dishes in the present condition as when all the vegetables and fruits which we bought from the market contain chemicals that causes serious health problems.

Papaya is used as both cooked and raw food. Papaya dishes like salads,curries and stews are made with unripe papaya fruit. The Ripe papaya fruit is eaten by removing skin and seeds. The odor of the ripe papaya fruit strike unfavourable smell. Black seed,leaves,fruit are edible part in papaya and have spicy taste. Leaves are steamed and eaten as spinach in south Asia.

Papaya fruit is rich in pro-vitamin A carotenoids, vitamin C,papain, folate and dietary fiber. It also contains calcium,thaimine,niacin,iron. Papaya has some beauty benefits. Papaya facial is used for removing dead cells,dark spots,pimples and thus improves complexion.Papaya has many medicinal values. 1) Ingredients for making Ommakka Thoran/Papaya Thoran


  • Green chilly-4 Nos

  • Ommakka -500 gm

  • Garlic -4 spring

  • Cumine -2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder-1 teaspoon

  • Coconut paste -quarter cup

  • Salt -to taste

Tempering
  • Coconut oil - 2 teaspoon

  • Curry leaves - 1 spring

  • Small onion(sliced) - 2 cloves

  • Mustard seeds - quarter teaspoon

  • Red chilly - 2 Nos


How to Make Ommakka Thoran/Papaya Thoran


Step 1:Peel the skin of ommakka and wash thoroughly in running water,then put it into a large pan.

Step 2:Grind ingredients like grated coconut ,chopped green chilly,turmeric powder,garlic,cumine and salt.

Step 3:Then add grinded items into the above large pan and cover the pan till steam comes.

Step 4:Then open it and stir well. Close it again for few more minutes and keep it aside.

Step 5:Heat the coconut oil in another pan, then add mustard seeds into it.

Step 6:When seeds crackle,add sliced small onions,red chilly and curry leaves into it. Stir well till it becomes light brown color. Turn off the flame.

Step 7:Add this Mixture into above main dish and stir thoroughly.
Here we made delicious and amazingly tasty local Kerala dish Ommakka thoran /Papaya Thoran. Then serve it with the steamed rice.

Tips and Tricks


  • Don't cook it too much more than the mentioned time.


  • 2) Ingredients for making Ommakka Mezhukkupuratti/Papaya Fry


    • ommakka-500 gm

    • Red chilly powder-3 teaspoon

    • Garlic-4 spring

    • Coconut oil -3 teaspoon

    • Salt -To Taste


    How To Make Ommakka Mezhukkupuratti/Papaya Fry


    Step 1:Wash Ommakka well in running water , peel the skin and then slice very thinly.

    Step 2:Add Ommakka and salt in a heated pan at low flame for 5 minutes and then keep it aside.

    Step 3:Add coconut oil in another pan and then add garlic into it.Stir it till becomes brownish color.

    Step 4:Add red chilly powder to it and stir it for few minutes.

    Step 5:Then add this mixture into the above main dish and stir it for 10 minutes.The dish Ommakka Mezhukkupuratti/Papaya Fry is now ready to be served with steamed rice. You will surely have a great lunch.

    Tips and Tricks


  • Add half teaspoon pepper powder to the dish.It makes more tasty and delicious.


  • 3) Ingredients For Making Ommakka Erissery


    • Ommakka-500 gm

    • Turmeric Powder-1 Teaspoon

    • Coconut -one cup

    • Garlic-4 spring

    • Cumine-one pinch

    • Green chilly-4 teaspoon

    • Curry Leaves-2

    • Small onion-2

    • Salt-To Taste

    Tempering
    • Coconut oil - 2 teaspoon

    • Curry leaves - 1 spring

    • Small onion(sliced) - 2 cloves

    • Mustard seeds - quarter teaspoon

    • Red chilly - 2


    How to Make Ommakka Erissery


    Step 1:Peel the skin of ommakka and Wash ommakka thoroughly in running water and slice it into bigger size.

    Step 2:Add turmeric powder,salt,ommakka and curry leaves into a heated pan at low flame for five minutes.

    Step 3:Once the Ommakka is cooked,smash it with a spoon for getting a good curry.

    Step 4:Grind the ingredients like grated coconut,garlic,green chilly,cumine and then add the mixture into the above cooked ommakka ,then stir well for few minutes.

    Step 5:Heat the coconut oil in another pan,then add mustard seeds into it.

    Step 6:When seeds crackle,add sliced small onions,red chilly,coconut and curry leaves into it. Stir well till it becomes light brown color.

    Step 7:Mix it with above main dish. Turn off the flame and serve it with hot steamed rice.

  • Do not add water into Ommakka Erissery while making it.
