N. Peethambara Kurup was born at Navaikulam in Thiruvanthapuram as the son of Late. Shri P.N. Narayana Kurup & Smt. L. Bhavani Amma. During his days of studies, Peethambara Kurup was much active in student's politics being an activist of the Kerala Students Union. After completing his B.A, Kurup had done B.L from Law Academy at Thiruvanthapuram. N. Peethambara Kurup who made his presence alive in the campus rose to popularity through his oratory skills.
N. Peethambara Kurup who soon became a crowd puller through his unique way of public speaking climbed up the ladder of success and was bejeweled with top posts in the party. He became the president of the Thiruvanthapuram District Congress Committee.
He served as a teacher in Kadambattukonam Vocational High School and could keep the pace of his talent among his students too. In 1964 he resigned the job to give full dedication to politics. From the beginning of his political career, Peethambara Kurup maintained his loyalty to senior congress leader Karunakaran.
Even though he contested the election to Kerala Assembly in 1987 from Vamanapuram, he failed to win the election. He served as the director of Oil Palm India from 1982-1987. He served as the president of the District Congress Committee for 5 years.
He left the party along with Karunakaran to form a new political party Democratic Indira Congress (DIC) and later returned to Congress along with him later. After returning to the party, Kurup was appointed vice-president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. N. Peethambara Kurup is also known as the author of several books.
'SahithyaDhara' written by him has already received wide appreciation from readers for its unique way of thoughts. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 for the first time after defeating P.Rajendran of CPI (M). Peethambara Kurup is currently serving as the Vice President of Kerala Pradesh Congress.
