Thalassery is also known as Tellicherry. This city is located at the Malabar coast of Kerala. Thalassery is the second oldest municipality of Kerala. It is second largest city of North Malabar in terms of population.Thalassery is located at 22km away from district headquarter of Kannur. Thalassery is famous for its historical importance.

History of Thalassery


Thalassery is known as the city of Cake,Cricket and Circus. It is considered as th birthplace of Indian circus.Indians played cricket first at this place. Thalassery is known as political and cultural capital of Kerala.
The first Malayalam newspaper 'Rajyasamacharam' was first published in Thalassery.The Romantic poem 'Veenapoovu' by Kumarashan is published here.
Thalassery is known for its British influence. The British has developed a seaport at Thalassery through which variety of spices such as pepper and cardamom has exported. British has built Thalassery fort to control over the trade in seaport. The Britsh established judicial court in Thalassery.

The Government of Kerala declared Thalassery as the Heritage city of Kerala.A Rs.200 crore project for Thalassery Heritage Tourism Circuit has been announced by the Tourism Department, Government of Kerala.

Overbury's Folly


It is an enchanting tourist spot of Thalassery which attracts lots of tourists and local people. It is established by a local British judge E.N.Overbury.

Thalassery Fort


The Thalassery fort is preserved ass a historical monument. It is constructed by the British East India company in1708.

Thalassery Pier


It is an old pier extending in to Arabian sea.Now it is preserved as a Tourist center.

Muzhapilangad Beach


It is a famous drive in beach in Malabar which is a major picnic spot of Thalassery. It is located parallel to NH17 between Thalassery and kannur.

Dharmadam Island


It is a small 2 hectare private island which is a beutiful sight from the Muzhapilangad beach.It is located 4km away from the town of Thalassery.

Nearest railaway station is Thalassery railway station.
Kozhikode International Airport is about 93 km away from Thalassery. Thalassery is well connected by roads to all the major cities of the state.NH17 passes through the city.
