The Election Commission of India, the official authority which supervises and provides guidelines for elections in the country, had declared last year that Assemly Elections would be held this year in the States of Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
As per the directive of the Election Commission of India, all the Chief Electoral Officers of these States & of Puducherry must complete publication of the electoral rolls by the end of January 2011.
Note: January 1, 2011 had been declared as the cut-off date to include all persons aged 18 yeas and above as voters in the electoral rolls.

As per the official election norms, the elections of a State Assembly are held only at the conclusion of that State's Assembly term. Since the Kerala Assembly term completes its work on May 23rd 2011, the dates of the 2011 Kerala Assembly Polls will definitely be before that date.
The number of seats for the 2011 Kerala Assembly Polls is 140. Presently the Left parties is governing at the helm of Kerala, but there could be a change of Govt. in the upcoming polls.
Latest updates and official dates of the 2011 Kerala Assembly Elections: The Election Commission of India today announced the official date of the Kerala Assembly polls as April 13th 2011 (Wednesday). All 140 Assembly Constituencies will go to the polls on the same day. Counting of votes will be done on May 13th 2011.

Last date for withdrawal of candidature: 30th March 2011
Date before which election process shall be completed: 18th May 2011
