Kumaran Asan's crowning achievement of was his “Buddha Charitham" in 5 volumes. This Mahakavya earned for him the title “Mahakavi (great poet). He has many great works to his credit. Asan is also known as Mahakavi Kumaran Asan. Kumaran was born in a merchant family to Narayanan Perungudi in April 1873 in Kayikkara village, Chirayinkeezhu taluk. He had his guidance from his father who was well versed in Malayalam and Tamil. Kumaran Asan inherited his taste for Kathakali and Classical music from his father. Kumaran had training in mathematics and Sanskrit and had a liking for these subjects. He resigned the job fixed by his father for him to pursue the study of Sanskrit in Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. Sri Narayana Guru and S N D P
Kumaran was a sickly child and was brought under the care of Sri Narayanaguru by his father. Asan was one of the staunch followers of the Guru. He has propagated the ideals and messages of the Guru through his literatures. He has worked as the secretary of S N D P. Family
In 1918 Kumaranasan married a lady by name Bhanumathi and had to two male children.Mahakavi's Death
Kumaranasan's death happened quite unexpectedly. On January 16th1924 while he was traveling in a motor boat from to Kollam to Kottayam the boat was sunk suddenly ending a prolific life. Kumaranasan was fifty one at the time of his death.Kerala's Mahakavis
Along with Vallathol Narayana Menon and Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer, he was part of a highly creative period in Malayalam literature and all three were the Mahakavis. Like the other two and the rest of their contemporaries, he worked for the social changes in the state and the country.
