Kerala Style Kovakka Pickle

Kovakka is one of the most commonly available vegetable to us. lets check out a simple pickle recipe out of it.


1 kovakka -1 kg
2 Chilly powder -50 g
3 Turmeric powder -10 g
4 Mustard seeds -10 g
5 Ginger(chopped) -50 g
6 Sugar -1 tsp
7 Vinegar -200 ml
8 Asafoetida(kayam) -1/2 tsp
9 Fenugreek powder (uluva) -1 tsp
10 Gingelly oil -250 ml
11 Salt -100 g


Chop kovakka into small pieces and cook in steam.Now heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.Then add ginger-garlic and saute for some time.Low the flame and add chilly powder,turmeric powder,asafoetida,fenugreek powder and stirr well.Add kovakka to this masala with salt and in an airtight container.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: gave out a taste that i never expected from kovakkai.
