Mulaku Kootu is a simple side dish. It is a gravy recipe easy to prepare. Though a main gravy curry like sambar to be taken with cooked rice, this requires another sub side item at least a pickle, for effect. This can be made with select vegetables.

The vegetables for this can be a combination of yam and curry banana, yam/plantain and payar or with leafy vegetables.

Ingredients:

1.Quarter kg (both vegs together) of the vegetables or 2 bundles of leaf vegetables (cheera).
2.Tuar Dal - 30 grams
3.Coconut gratings 1 cup
4.Red chilly - 4 - 5 (reduce or increase depending upon the requirement of heat (erive) of chilly
5.Jeera 1/4 teas spoon
6.Salt to taste
7.curry leaves (not necessary for cheera)
8.1 table spoon of oil used at home, Mustard 1/4 tea spoon and udud dal 1/4 tea spoon for garnishing.

Method of preparation:

Cook the vegetable pieces or leaf vegetable with tuar daal salt. (if leaf vegetable is used, mash the cooked cheera in mixer-grinder and make it like a thick pulp)

In the meantime make paste of the coconut gratings, red chillies and Jeera in mixer-grinder.

Keep the cooked vegetable and daal with water and salt on lighted stove and bring it to boil. Add the coconut paste to this and allow it to simmer for 3-4 minutes.

Heat the oil and put mustard and a red chilly pieces. When the mustard splutters pour the same into the curry.

Use this with cooked rice. It requires another sub dish like pickle, pacchadi or arachukalakki etc to have best effect as the dish is without tamarind.
