Collections of Kerala traditional Mathi curry or sardine dishes

Sardines are rich in fatty acids which reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease and it is rich for vitamin D, calcium, B12 and protein. According to latest studies the regular usage of sardine helps to lower the blood sugar levels slightly. We can prepare sardine using traditional method. Some of them are given here.


1)Boiled sardine (Mathi pollichathu)



Ingredients:-
Cleaned Sardine - 1/2 kg
Red Chilly powder – 1 to 2 tea spoon
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tea spoon
Tamarind- 1to 3 pieces or vinegar- 2 tea spoon
Salt –1/4 tea spoon
Tomato – 1 small
Grind Small onion- 3 to 4 nos
Ginger- 1 small piece
Green chilly- 2 to 3 nos
Curry leaf – small pinch
Coconut oil- 2 to 3 tea spoon
Water- ½ cup

Preparation method

Heat the oil in a pan, slightly fry the grind onion then it is mix with chilly and turmeric power allow to fry 1 second, then add tomato pieces stir it continuously until it become paste then add water , salt and tamarind or vinegar allow to boiled 5 minuts on a high flame. After 5 minuts add grind mixture of green chilly and ginger then allow boiling only 1 second then taking the pan from flame and decorating it with curry leaf and serving it with puttu ,velleppam, ediyappam, rice etc.

2)Sardine with coconut (mathy Thoran)



Ingredients:-
Cleaned Sardine - 1/2 kg
Turmeric Powder -1/4 tea spoon
Tamarind- 1to 2 piece
Salt –1/4 tea spoon
Grind Small onion- 3 to 4 nos
Ginger- 1 small piece
Green chilly- 2 to 3 nos
Curry leaf – small pinch
Coconut- 1 cup
Coconut oil- 2 to 3 tea spoon
Mustard – 2 to three pinch

Preparation Method

First the sardines are mixed with little water then add turmeric powder, tamarind and salt and allow to boiled 2 to three minuts. Grind the coconut with green chilly, ginger and small onion in a mixer grinder, this mixture is add in to the boiled sardine and stir carefully few seconds and take the pan from flame.

Heat the oil in a pan, fry the mustard and curry leaf and mix it with pre prepared coconut sardine mixture, sardine thoran ready, we can serve it with rice.

3)Sardine fry in a banana leaf (Mathi Fry)



Ingredients:-
Cleaned Sardine - 1/2 kg
Red Chilly powder- 1 and1/2 tea spoon
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tea spoon
Pepper powder – ½ tea spoon
Garlic -2 piece
Salt –1/4 tea spoon
Grind Small onion- 1 to2 nos
Ginger- 1 small piece
Green chilly- 1 to2 nos
Curry leaf – 2 to 3 nos
Coconut oil- 2 to 3 tea spoon
Banana leaf

Preparation Method

Mix all he ingredients in a mixer grinder and allow to past. Mix this paste with sardine and cover each sardine with banana leaf. Heats the oil in a pan add the sardine that covered by banana leaf and allow frying in a low flame. Very less oil is required for this dish.
