Pakshipathalam is a large cave in the top region of Brahmagiri hills. Bats are the major accommodators in the cave. This is also a home for a special species of birds known as ‘Edible Nest Swift’ which built their nest with their saliva. The interesting fact is that, there is no road route to Pakshipathalam cave and it needs almost 8 kms of trekking through the forests. The journey starts from the foot hills of Thirunelli. It takes about 3 hours to reach the cave inside the forest. The best time to visit Pakshipathalam is November to April.

Location of Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam is a place in Wayanad district and is a treasure of Wayanad Wildlife. It is about 1740 metres above sea level. The place is situated near Thirunelli temple in Wayanad. It is about 36 kms away from Mananthavadi, 71 kms away from Kalpatta and 78 kms away from Sulthan Batheri. Trekking is only the access to reach the place which is from Thirunelli and it takes nearly three hours.

Travel Route to Pakshipathalam

The journey can be through Mananthavadi - Kattikkulam road to reach Thirunelli. The bus services are available from 5AM to 8.30 PM from Mananthavadi to Thirunelli. And are available 7AM to 6.30PM from Thirunelli to Mananthavadi. The nearest Airport is Karipur International Airport and the nearest Railway Station is Kozhikode Railway Station. Many tourist cars and buses are available from Kozhikode to Wayanad and then to Pakshipathalam.

Attractions in Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam, from the word itself which means the ‘Home of birds’ is a bird watcher’s paradise. This is an ideal place for the Ornithologist. As it is also a destination having rare sceneries, it makes it a perfect place for wildlife photography. The variety of plant and animal species are also prime attractions in Pakshipathalam. The forests in Pakshipathalam is a habitat for animals like elephants and deers.

Paksipathalam is also well known for trekking activities. The journey to this place itself is trekking trails. For trekking activities, one should have to take permission from forest authorities and they provide adequate facilities. So Pakshipathalam is also must visit place for those who loves adventure.

The caves of Pakshipathalam is also famous for rare species of birds like ‘Edible Nest Swift’ which makes saliva nests. Bats are also the common visitors of this cave. It is also said that some of the ancient saints used to meditate in these caves.
