The Kakanakakunnu Palace was constructed during the reign of Sree Moolam Thirunaal one of the rulers of the Travancore state. Royal banquets used to be held here at this Kanakakunnu palace.
During the reign of Sree Chitra Thirunaal the palace was modified and tennis courts were constructed in the Palace premises. This place is known for its structural and architectural elegance and the palace was used by the royal family as a venue to entertain their guests in those days.The interiors are decorated with crystal chandeliers and other exquisite pieces of royal furniture.
The stunning architecture of the palace is one of the remaining legacies of the Colonial era. At present the palace is protected by the tourism department. This palace has alson been enlisted as the heritage monument by the national Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage.

Cultural programs and festivals at Kanakakunnu palace auditoriums

Nisagandhi open air Auditorium is located within the palace grounds. This is a sought after venue for staging cultural programs . The Auditorium plays host to various programs like a week long festival of Indian Classical dance festival including Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi etc. Many artists participate in this festival from across India.
There is a Suryankanthi auditorium which is a popular venue for exhibitions , trade fairs and other cultural programs. there is a week long food festival which is held in the grounds and sees many chefs from the hotels all over the cityof Thiruvananthapuram.
