Kappayam- The Land of Reed Cutters

Kappayam is one of the enchanting tourists destination in Kerala which is located in the Eranakulam District. The place reveals the tribulations of a life on and revolving around reeds of Edamalayar reedcutters and of a night spent in a hut waiting for the elephants. The reed rafting along Edamalayar river is altogether a different adventure experience. The stretch comes under the jurisdiction of Malayattoor forest division. Kappam is a calm and quite place which is best suitable for tourists who wish to spent their holidays away from the noises of the city.
Location: Kappayam is located near Edamalayar, near Kothamangalam in Eranakulam district and also near to the place known as Malakkapara in Thrissur district.

Tourism in Kappayam

Tourist hopes in Kakkayam mainly include the adventurous reed rafting. The rafting was mainly along the tributaries of Edamalayar. Thousands of reeds are arranged and tied like a small plane boats and is driven by a Yamaha Engine attached to the reeds. Tree huts are also some of the other interesting features of Kappayam. Tree huts are small residing features on the top of the trees. A stay in these tree huts amidst of the dense forest will surely be an exciting experience. It also provides a rare chance to see the forest elephants in close up.

Kappayam also provide tourism oppurtunities like trekking. There is a trekking route from Kappayam to Malakkappara which is almost 5 kms. From Malakkappara one can go to Valkappara or Athirappalli. Valkkappara is 24 kms away and Athirappalli is 52 kms away. Thattekkad Wildlife Sanctuary is on the way to Edamalayar. This famous Sanctuary is just 13 kms away from Kappayam. Bhothathankettu is also nearer to Kappayam.

How to Reach Kappayam

The nearest Airport available is Kochi International Airport which is 65 kms away. Aluva Railway Station is the nearest railway station, 55 kms away. Kothamangalam is accessible from Kochi via Aluva (NH-47). Take deviation from to right from Aluva, head towards Kothamangalam via Perumbavoor. The alternate route is via Thrippunithara and Muvattupuzha. From Kothamangalam head towards Vadattupara vis Bhoothathankettu. Road from VAdattupara leads to Edamalayar Dam site which is 3 kms away. Kappayam can be reached via Edamalayar. There are two routes to Edamalayar dam site from Thundam Junction. Don't take left diversion, you may get trapped infront of wild elephants on the way. This road is abandoned by the public due to elephant's menace.
