Makaravilakku Festival on January 14 at Sabarimala is an auspicious festival observed on the first day of Makara Masam according to Malayalam Calendar during which the sun crosses from one Zodiac to another. On December 26, 2012 the mandala puja was celebrated at Sabarimala temple. To celebrate Makaravilakku Puja, the temple will be opened till 20th of January 2013. Number of Ayyappa devoties took part in Erumeli Petta Thullal - a traditional ritual dance which was held on 11th January 2013. On account of Makaravilakku puja, it a customary to adorn Thiruvabharanam - sacred ornaments of Lord Ayyappan. Thiruvabharanam Procession from Pandalam Sastha Temple was started on January 12, 2013, by 1:00 pm and it will reach Pamba at Sabarimala by 3:00 Pm on January 14, 2013.
The Thiruvabharanam procession will be given a traditional welcome by Travancore Devaswom Board, after which the procession will be carried via Saramkuthi an important pilgrim spot on the way to Sabarimala Temple. On the temple premises, TDB Minister Sivakumar and other Devaswom Board authorities will receive the Thiruvabharanam - the sacred jewels of Swamy Ayyappa and they hand over it to the Chief Priest and Melsanthi who will adorn the precious sacred jewels to the diety of Swamy Ayyappan in the evening.
On January 14, 2013, by 6:30 pm Deeparadhana Aarthi will take place for Swamy Ayyappan. During the same time people can watch live dharshan of Makara jyothi 2013 at Ponnambalamedu at Sabarimala. It is considered auspicious and blessing to watch the live makaravilakku at Sabarimala on Makara Sankaranthi day. So to get blessings and dharshan of Ayyappa with Thiruvabharanam thousands of Sabarimala pilgrims flocking to this place.
How one can forget the Sabarimala Stampede tragedy during Makaravilakku festival happened two years back at Sabarimala.
