Story is considered to be like as follows. Little boy who was believed to be the Lord Vishnu disappeared after doing some mischievous activities. Sage chased away boy and reached Ananthankadu in Thiruvananthapuram. He saw the boy merging with Iluppa tree. Later the tree fell down and became Anantha Sayana Moorthi (Lord Vishnu sleeping in the celestial snake Anantha).

Appearance of deity


Lord assumed an extra ordinary large size with feet at Thrippadapuram, navel at Thiruvananthapuram and head at Thiruvallom. Sage requested Lord to shrink. Immediately Lord shrank and perceived the present size of deity in the temple. Sage prayed Padmanabha to be forgiven. Later swami offered rice kanji and uppumanga to Lord. Ananthankadu Nagaraja temple still persists in the north western region of Padmanabhaswamy temple.

Resting place or Samadhi place of swamiyar is now known as Vilwamangalam Sri Krishna Swami temple. Now let's see the details of deity in Ananatha Padmanabha swamy temple. Adi shesha, the serpent on which Lord is resting has five hoods facing inwards. Right hand of the Lord is placed over Shiva Linga. Lord Thiruvambadi is another important shrine present here. It has own namaskara mandapam, flagmast and balistones. Parthasarathi, the divine charioteer of Arjuna is worshipped here.
