Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair was born in Pathanmthitta district of Kerala as the son of Late Vishwanathan Nair and Santhakumari on 21st may 1960. His father was a government employee. Mohanlal completed his high school education in Model school Trivandrum and graduation (B.Com) in Mahatma Gandhi College at Thiruvananthapuram. As a student he was selected as the best actor in his school competition. When he was a college student, in 1978 Mohanlal made his debut in a Malayalam film named Thiranottam, unfortunately the film was not released. During the same year he has started to working with a production company owned by his friends Maniyan Pilla Raju and Priyadarshan. Maniyan Pilla Raju is a popular Malayalam actor and Priyadarshan is the world's famous film director. In 1980s he was acted a lead role in a movie named Manjil Virinja Pookkal, directed by Fazil, it was also the debut film of Fazil and the production of this film was handled by Navodaya Appachan. The Malayalam actor Shankar and Poornima were the hero and heroine of this movie. The film was a big hit in Malayalam film field and Mohanlal become popular through the film as an actor. For the period of 1983 he had got more than 25 films, but most of them were negative roles. Fortunately in 1984 he got a lead role in a Malayalam film Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, the movie was directed by his friend Priyadarshan. It is also the first success movie of Mohanlal and Priyadarshan group. Later they were jointly made lot of success movies in Malayalam film industry. Uyarangalil, Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu, Boeing Boeing and Aram + Aram Kinnaram are his some of successful during this period.
On 28 April 1988 Mohanlal married to Suchithra, she is the daughter of Tamil film producer Late K. Balaji. Mohanlal and Suchithra have two children, one daughter named Vismaya and one boy named Pranav. Pranav has acted in few movies in Malayalam. his first film was Onnaman. Mohanlal is also a perfect father and he is giving more importance for his kid's ambitions. He owns a house at Ooty and a villa in Arabian Ranches and a flat in Burj Khalifa at Dubai. As an actor the period of 1978 to 1979 was not good, but 1980-2000 periods were a golden period for Mohanlal in Malayalam film industry. During this period he got chances to work with great masters like G. Aravindan, Hariharan, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Padmarajan, Bharathan and Lohithadas. It was his lucky period and can handle various roles. The super star Mohanlal along with actor and script writer Sreenivasan worked in several movies, most them are big hits. In 1986 he had won his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor Through the film T. P. Balagopalan M.A, directed by Sathyan Anthikad. The film Rajavinte Makan make him a as a superstar in Malayalam film industry. In Rajavinte Makan he played the role of an underworld don. Then almost all movies which he had worked with were big success, during this period he has worked together with Sreenivasan and Shobana in some movies they were also made big hits in Mollywood. In 1986 a super hit film named Pattanapravesham gave a new image to Mohanlal and Sreenivasan in their acting carrier. In this film Mohanlal played the role of detective Dasan and Sreenivasan played the role of detective Vijayan. More than a romantic hero he can handle most haunting roles, he had proved it through the role of his Sethu Madhavan in the film Kireedam in 1989, and he earned National Film Special Jury Award in this film. In 1990s he had worked with some of commercial movies like His Highness Abdullah, Midhunam and No.20 Madras Mail. In 1991 the most popular film Bharatham, he was played the role of Carnatic singer, earned him the National Award for Best Actor in 1991. Through the film Kamaladalam he had proved his talent in dancing, in this movie he had played the role of a dance teacher. The movie was a big hit at this period. On July 9, 2008, he was formally inducted to the Territorial Army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Army Chief Deepak Kapoor. He had worked in a Bollywood film named In Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag; it is the remake of Bollywood film Sholay, in which Mohanlal worked with Amitabh Bachchan in a lead role. He is the owner of many restaurants called Mohanlal tastebuds in Dubai, The Harbour Market in Bangalore, and Travancore Court in Kochi. The company of products like Mohanlal's Tastebuds pickle and curry powders most familiar in Kerala, Mohanlal is one of the partners of this company.
