Thrissur pooram an Overview


Thrissur pooram is the biggest pooram that held in our state Kerala. It is popularly known as Pooram of all Poorams (Festivals).This pooram is conducted in every year at the month of Medam based on the Malayalam calendar. This is approximately month of April or May in English calendar. The main centre of this Pooram is held at Vadakkumnathan temple, near the famous Thekkinkadu maithan( ground). This pooram is a continuous 36 hours of program, which attracted many people all over the country and the international tourists. Peoples are like to came to Thrissur for watching the Thrissur pooram. The main attraction of this pooram is that it contains more than 50 elephants are decorated by Nettipatam, and also the Kudamattam. There are so many small poorams that are grouped in Thekkinkadu maithan. at the Pooram day. Paramekkavu and the Thiruvambadi are the two groups that involved as major part in the Pooram. Both of these groups perform Kudamattam as the contest. Ilanjithara melam is the other attraction of this festival.

History of Thrissur pooram


Thrissur pooram is started before 200 years on the ruling of the great emperor Shakthan Thampuran. He made unifying of small temples near the Vadakkumnathan temple and treated as a single mass festival. He made these temples in two groups; they are western group and eastern group. In this western group is popularly known as Thiruvambadi, and the eastern group popularly known as Paramekkavu. Thiruvambadi consists of Kanimangalam, Laloor, Ayyanthole, Nethilakkavu and the Thiruvambady temple. Paramekkavu consists of Paramekkavu temple, Karamukku, Chembukavu, Choorakottukavu and Panamukkamppilly.

Major attractions in Thrissur pooram


The major attractions in Thrissur pooram are Kudamattam, Fireworks display, Panjavadyam, Exhibition, etc. These are the key factors that attracted the people from several places to this Pooram. At the pooram day the town is crowded with people from several areas. Thrissur pooram attracts the foreigners also; they are usually come to see Thrissur pooram, since it is a good for the view of eye.

Kudamattam


It is one of the major attractions in Thrissur pooram. This is a process of changing the umbrella. Mainly two groups Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi are take part in this contest. Both of them make different variety of umbrellas with colorful mode. And change alternatively. Both the group provides large money for making different variety of the umbrellas. They display these umbrellas by sitting in the Elephant. The elephants are decorated with Nettipattam. This is really a fascinating show for the eye. People like to watch this because of the beauty of this vision.

Fireworks display

This is the other attraction in Thrissur pooram festival. This is really a good attraction for both eye and ear. The contest is mainly between the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi groups. Fire works include different variety of colours. Peoples from all over the place are come to see this fireworks. There is a sample fire works is conducted before the main fire work. This will held on two days before the commencement of the pooram.

Panjavadyam

This is also another attraction of Thrissur pooram festival. Panjavadyam means the artistic display using five music instruments. This is a good hearing for the year. Peoples are come from various places to hear this. Thimila, Maddalam, Ilathalam, Idakka, Kombu are the five instruments used in Panjavadyam. Apart of this there is shinkarimelam, and other type of musical plays used chenda are also included in this festival. These are definitely a mind blowing performance.

Thrissur Pooram 2012 Exhibition


ExhibitionThis is another part that attracts the people related with Thrissur pooram. This exhibition attracts the peoples from varius parts of Thrissur district. People come to this for buying items, and seeing the varity of stalls through this exhibition. There are stalls of police; railway, space etc are in the Exhibition. Schedule of Thrissur pooram 2012


In 2012 Thrissur pooram held on May1. The function of Madathil varavu will commenced on 11 am of May 1. And also Elanjitharamelam is on 2.30 pm on the same day. The most beautiful show of kudamattam will be held on 5.30 pm at Royal darbar on the same day of the pooram. Fire works will be conducted on May 2 at 3.00 am.
