General information about Marari


Marari beach is a little known beach in Alapuzha. The word Marari originates from 'Mararikulam', the local fishing village in Alleppy. Marari beach is not a famous tourist destination. It is quiet,sleepy and calm with lots of sand peaks. The most important part of Marari is it's fishermen and their life. You can see the world as it was 100 years ago. The temperature in Marari is warm and humid. The best time to visit Marari is from October to May.


How to reach Marari beach


Marari beach is barely 11km from Alleppy town and 70 km from Kochi. This place can be accessed by almost all sorts of transportation. If you want to travel by air, there are two airports; Thiruvananthapuram International airport at a distance of 155km away and Kochin International airport at 85 km away. A railway station is there in Alleppy, known under the same name 'Mararikulam'. Marari has an excellent road ways which connects all the main cities and towns. NH 47 passes through S.L.Puram, which is 5 km to the east of Mararikulam. For those who want to enjoy the beauty of Kuttanad, boats are the best. And many of the main attractions in Alleppy are easily accessed by foot.


Main attractions in Marari


Marari is a developing tourist destination. It is at it's primitive stage, unnoticed and sleepy. The best thing that you will enjoy here is the slow and relaxing life. But there are many attractions in Alleppy.

If you are there in August, you can enjoy the snake boat race. Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race is held on the second Saturday of August. Traditional houseboats which are manned by more than hundred people, singing at their high pitch and competing for the cup is worth watchable.

Alapuzha temple festivals are impressive. Don't worry if you are a non-Hindu. Unlike other temples in Kerala, Alapuzha temples allow everyone. Five elephants carrying the Krisha idol and walking a long distance in the accompaniment of music is a rare occasion.

St. Marry's Church ( Champamkulam palli) is a famous church in Alleppy. It is believed that this is one among the seven churches established by St. Thomas.

If you want to add more colour to your trip, Kumarakom bird sanctuary, backwaters and the traditional coir making units are also excellent destinations.

Marari does not have a large number of luxurious hotels and resorts. The only resort present in this area is the Marari Beach Resort. But, if you want to know the hospitality of locals and the beauty of the backwaters, there are many homestays available for you. New resorts like Pullethai and Muthoot Leisure and Hospitality Services are being constructed at Marari.
