Welcome to Calicut

Calicut or Kozhikode is one of the hot spot for tourism in Kerala. The tourism history of Calicut has been started from the ancient ages itself. The place was the head quarters of the Samuthiri Kingdom. From the historic period itself, tourists often visit here as a part of trade. Calicut was the main centre of marketing and trade of Malabar region in those days. Now also, it is a great venue for domestic and international trade in India. The famous Portuguese traveler Vasco De Gama landed here with his crew men here in 1548. It was in a place known as Kappad. The district of Calicut is surrounded by the Wayanad Hills in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west.

Calicut is located in the northern part of Kerala. There are places in Calicut which are excellent spot for tourism. The fame and glory of Calicut lies in the traditional martial art forms like Kalarippayattu, Urumiyadi etc. Calicut is also famous for its tasty dishes which include the Kozhikodan Halwa. It is also known as the Second Mecca of football lovers. Regarding the topography, Calicut has a sandy coastal belt terrain due to the presence of the great Arabian Sea. The place is having some rocky highlands towards the east due to the presence of Wayanad hills.

Art and Culture of Calicut

The temples and mosques of Calicut is reflecting the art and culture of the great city. All the religions here are living with religious harmony with cooperation and mutual understanding. This is one of the places in Kerala to feel the real hospitality of Kerala life and its people. Kozhikode is also known for its traditional architecture which includes the sculptures, carvings and inscriptions. Most of the temples in Calicut reveal this. The temples at Tali, Tiruvannur, Azhakodi, Varakkal etc are some of the good examples. Calicut is also known for the northern ballads which include some great warriors like Thacholi Othenan, Unniyarcha etc. Thacholi Othenan was known as the ‘Robinhood of north malabar’. Besides Hinduism, Muslims are also prominent residents in Calicut. Calicut is the district in Kerala, which is having the second largest population of Muslims after Malappuram. Calicut is world famous for the muslim’s contest like Mappilappattu and Oppana.

Tourism In and Around Calicut

Calicut is well known for its tourism. The history of tourism in Kozhikode was started by the foreigners like Arabs, Chinese, Europeans etc. Kappad is one of the famous tourist spot in Calicut known for Vasco De Gama, who discovered the sea route to India. The beautiful beach and harbour of Kappad is a real recreational spot for the tourists. Recently, The International Kite Festival was also conducted in Kappad, which once again promoted the tourist arrival in Kappad.

Calicut is having its own beach, known as Kozhikode Beach which is another prime attraction. The light house, sea bridge and aquarium\are some of the intereting places to visit near the Kozhikode Beach. The historical museum in the name of Pazhassiraja ( one of the great legends of Kerala) is also situated in Calicut City in a place known as Easthill. It is only 5 kms away from the main city.

The Mananchira Square in Calicut town is another leisure destination. The ground opens for the morning and evening. It is one of the best place to spend some time in the evening after the busy college schedule or office works. The Manachira Square s also having a Basketball court inside under the department of sports in Kerala. So for those who like have game can approach there with a basketball. Others can enjoy the game too. Besides this, some of the main cultural fests of Kerala is conducted in the Mananchira grounds in Calicut. Mananchira is situated in the Heart of Calicut City.

The Planetarium is also an important place to visit. The film shows relating the solar system and the Universe are some of the striking features in the planetarium. It is a best centre for the illustration of Science and will be very helpful for the students who want to specialize in science subjects. There is also a scientific museum in Calicut running for the same purpose. Kallayi Wood Industry is another place of interest in Calicut.

A place known as ‘kalippoyka’ which literally means the ‘play stream’ is an ideal spot for boating in Calicut. The boat services are available from 10o clock in the morning to 7o clock in the evening. Beypore Fort and Beyore boat factory are also some famous tourist destinstion near the Calicut main town. Tourists from different corners of the world are visiting Calicut to enjoy the beauty of these places.
