The LBS Center for Science and Technology is a premier educational institute in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. It has a number of centers and sub centers throughout the state. The center is involved in facilitation of proper interaction between technical institutions and the industrial houses in the state. Introduction
LBS Center for Science and Technology is a premier a reputed center for computer training and consultancy in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. The center has regional centers and sub centers throughout the state to coordinate the activities of various technical institutes. The center is responsible for the software consultancy and data processing works of all governmental departments, including those from public sector enterprises. Other areas of work include the teacher education, technical education and research, paramedical education, and human resource consultancy for selected government and public sector companies.History and Organizational Setup
This premier institution was registered in the year 1976 under the Travancore-Cochin Registration Act XII of 1955. The purpose of incorporation of this autonomous institution was to facilitate the proper interaction of technical institutions with various industrial houses in the state.
From the onset, the LBS center is governed by a Governing Body and Executive Council. The Chief Minister of the state is the Chairman and the Minister for Education is the Vice-chairman of its Governing Body. On the other hand, the Principle Secretary in charge of Higher Education is the Chairman and the Director of Technical Education is the Vice-chairman of its Executive Committee. The Director of the center is the member secretary of both the governing bodies and its Executive head. To help the Director to execute his administrative functions, there are other staff members working under him. Apart from the non-teaching staffs that support its administrative wing, there are eminent teaching staffs that teach and support the various courses offered by it.Expertise
The center has a team of highly qualified personnel to offer quality services to the society. These staff members hold either postgraduate degrees or doctoral degrees from the reputed institutions in the country. Apart from the services of these faculties, the services of eminent Professors and subject matter experts from reputed institutions and industrial houses are sought to improve the quality of education and consultancy services. The LBS center also seeks the help of these visiting faculties or consultants to execute various projects undertaken by it. This allows the center to bring its services to the desired level of excellence so that it can successfully complete the projects in time.
Academics
The center runs various courses for the benefit of students in the institute. The courses offered at the center include Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, teachers' education, and various computer courses. The students can take up either certificate courses or degree courses in their chosen subject. The short-term computer courses offered by the center include Java and Advanced Programming, Oracle 8i and Visual Basic, Java Programming, MS Office and Internet, DTP, MS Office, Oracle 8i and Developer 2000, C Programming, UNIX and C, Data Entry and Office Automation, Computerized Financial Accounting using Tally, Programming using C++, Visual C++, etc. In order to increase the employability, and soft and presentation skills of the job aspirants, the center is offering courses in Spoken English. The long-term computer courses offered by the center include PGDCA, DCA, PDSE, PGDSE, Integrated Diploma in Computer Hardware and Network Maintenance, Diploma in Computerized Financial Accounting, Diploma in Web and Internet Technologies, and a Diploma in Hardware and Network Maintenance.
Kerala University has recognized the LBS center as its research study center. Hence the center is offering PhD courses to those people who wanted to pursue the interest in their chosen field. Since it has established its presence as a leading research center in the state, it has already helped few research scholars to submit their thesis of the granting of the philosopher's degree. More people have joined this program to materialize their dream of getting nice offers from multinational companies. The center also has a number of engineering colleges under its control. These provide quality education to all the members of the society.Employment Generation
As a result of its commitment to offer quality education, it has become popular amongst the student population. On an average, the center is able to provide employment opportunities to about 300 to 400 people on a part-time basis annually. The people who have undergone various courses at the center are employed as part-time Software Developers, Guest Faculties, Computer Operators, Data Entry Operators, Data Preparation Assistants, Drilling Crews, equipment repairers.Conclusion
