Bhoothathankettu is a beautiful place situated in Kothamangalam and is exactly in a place named Pindimala which is 50 km from the main city Kochi. The old Bhoothathankettu has a great history behind and is believed that monsters have built it. Bhoothathankettu which also means 'monster fort' is one of the famous and beautiful places located about 10 km distant from Kothamangalam and 50 km from Kochi exactly in Pindimala. It is a dam formed naturally by large rocks arranged in a row with some gap provided. These rocks are formed due to two large flood occurred thousands of years back. But the mythology believed in a wired manner. History says that this dam was built by 'bhoothams' or 'monsters' by blocking the river periyar. Thus the region under Thrikkariyoor Temple of lord shiva will all flooded.

The bhoothams only acquire energy to their maximum during night and these bhoothams started to lifts the heavy and large rocks over a long distance from huge mountains so as to resist the flow of water. But lord shiva decided to fake himself to a cock (rooster) and started crowing. Suddenly the monsters feared that dawn is going to break off and they left the place without completing it as they lose their energy when sun rises. Thrikkariyoor Mahadeva Temple is now one of the most famous and has large number of worshipers in and around the district. It is believed that this place was the capital of ancient chera kingdom.

Bhoothathankettu is a calm and quiet place with cool breeze blowing softly along the shore. Tourists will wonder how time runs off when they visit here with their family or friends.
