1)The Periyar wild life sanctuary

It is the one of the most famous bio - diversity spot in Kerala. It spread across 800 sq km of which 300 sq km is thick ever green forest. It was declared as a tiger reserve in the year of 1978 . With its diversity of wild life, scenic beauty, Artificial dam , the reserve attracts the visitors from all over the world. The Mullaperiyar dam across the Periyar river, forms the artificial lake gives the fascination to the wild life sanctuary. Herds of elephants are come down to the river for drinking water is the one of the greatest attraction of the periyar river. This is the only wild life sanctuary in Kerala where the tourists can view the beauty of diversity of wild life at very close from the safety boat. There are many floras and faunas present in this sanctuary. Over 2000 flowering plants including grass species and about 150 species of orchid plants can be seen here.

Different species of birds, mammals, reptiles are the other fascinating view of this sanctuary. Birds include hornbill, wood picker, kingfisher, darter, parrot, grackle, raptor etc can count up to more than 250 numbers. There are 35 species of mammals include wild elephant, sloth bear, wild cat, tiger, flying squirrel, malabar giant squirrel, guar, sambar dear etc . Different poisonous snakes like cobra, viper, krait and other reptiles and non poisonous snakes can also seen here. Besides this there are different species of plantation like tea, cardamom, pepper etc surround the periyar wild life sanctuary.

2)Kumaly

This is a plantation town, 4 km from the Thekkady. It is situated on the outskirts of periyar wild life sanctuary. This is a place where a lot of shopping centers and spice centers are present. Tourists who come to Thekkady can buy different spices and other ingredients from here. This is a main bus station and a place where the accommodative facilities are present.

3)Mangla devi temple

Mangla devi templeThis is a famous temple believed to constructed more than 2000 years ago. This ancient temple is hidden by the forest and it is a special place for the tourists who come in Thekkady. This is beautiful pilgrim centre situated at height of near 1400 m from the sea level. This is a temple constructed in the form of traditional Kerala style architecture. Tourists can entre in to the temple only on the 'Chithra Pournamy' festival day. The permission to the visit the area is obtained from the wildlife warden.

4)Pullumedu

This is also a attractive place for the tourists Who come to Thekkady. Pullumedu is famous in variety of faunas and floras. The hills draped with mists and greenery is a stunning view for the tourists. These beauties of the pullumedu can only accessed through jeep and it gives a special journey for the tourists. From the pullumedu hills we can view the well known temple of Sabarimala 'Sree Ayyappa temple' and the shining of the lights from Makaravilakku festival. There is some rules and regulation needed to know to enter in to the place. Actually it is a restricted zone which is controlled and protected by the wildlife preservation officer of Thekkady. So no one can enter in to the place without the permission of the preservation officer.
