ATHIRAPPALLI AND VAZHACHAL WATERFALLS
Two of the finest waterfalls in Kerala, Athirapplli and Vazhachal are located in Thrissur district of the Kerala state. These two famous waterfalls are on the edge of Sholayar forst ranges, set amidst the lush greenery and at a height of 1000 feet from the sea level. The huge and living waterfalls along with the lush greenery makes Athirappally and Vazhachal a perfect tourist location for all the time. Covering an area of 3032 sq km ,Athirappally and Vazhachal are just 5km apart. This is an excellent spot for getting fresh wild honey and herbs.These two waterfalls are a part of the Chalakkudy river. Athirappally is turbulent and and furious, but Vazhachal is charm and cool. The vegetation in this area includes the riparian forests. Most exciting feature about the Athirappalli waterfall is the height from it is falling. The energetic water falls from a height of 80 feet. The Chalakkudy river near to these water fall is known for it's biodiversity. There is around 85 species of fresh water fishes in this river. Out of this 85 species 35 species are endemic to the Western Ghat and 9 are endangered.


Location;
Athirappally/ Vazhachal are near to Chalakkudy,in Thrissur district at a distance of 85km from Kochi. Athirappally is 63km from Thrissur and Vazhachal at 68 km from Thrissur.


Best time to visit
Although the place is open throughout the year to the tourists, the best time to visit is from September to February. During this time the water will be in full force to welcome the visitors with the mists spraying high in the sky.

How to reach
Athirappally and Vazhachal are well connected by road. The nearest bus stand is the Thrissur bus stand. For the tourists coming from abroad, the nearest airport is the Kochi International Airport, which is 58 km away from Thrissur.. The nearest railway station is Thrissur railway station.

Climate in Athirappally and Vazhachal;
Climate in Athirappally is pleasant. The summer season starts from January to May and the Monsoon is from June to October. The temperature during summer is hot and range from 30 C to 36 C. During monsoon, the temperature ranges from 26 C to 32.


Other Things to note;
1.Tourists can visit these waterfalls from 8am to 6pm
2. Consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited in this area.
3. Plastics are not allowed here.
4. Feeding of animals is also restricted.
5. Don't engage yourself inside the water. The stones inside the water are very slippery and many deathes have recorde until now.
