Harita-Poonkavanom is a project prepared by R. Kamalahar, the divisional forest officer at Ranni. This project was prepared with a view to reduce the plastic menace at Sabarimala & the surrounding forest areas especially during the annual pilgrimage season. The littering of plastic waste at Sabarimala situated in the Periyar Tiger Reserve is a major source of environmental pollution. The project was prepared by R. Kamalahar with the help of local population, school-college students & VSS workers. The Harirta-Poonkavanom project makes people well aware of the need to make their surroundings clean & free from litter so as to protect their environment. Also note that publicity will be given through TV channels & newspapers in Kerala & the other states on the alarming pollution menace posed by the plastic waste in Sabarimala of Kerala state, India.

Apart from this, special check posts would be set up at places like Elavumkal, Plappally, Laha, Kanamala & Angamoozhy on the main trunk roads leading to Sabarimala so that they can collect plastic carry bags brought by devotees & replace it on the spot itself with eco-friendly cloth bags. Necessary arrangements will be made to remove empty pet bottles from Pampa, Sabarimala & the surrounding forest areas. During the annual pilgrimage season, workers will be posted at the Pampa Manalpuram to remove the waste that was accumulated along the iron fence erected across Pampa River. The non-degradable waste will be taken outside the forest for recycling purpose while the solid waste will be aggregated. But the degradable waste will be disposed in earthen pits in the forest area itself. A 24 hour mobile rescue force headed by forest officials is available & the VSS members will be deployed at Laha, Plappally, Nilackal, Vadasserikkara, Pampa & Angamoozhy respectively.
