Cartoonists campaign on the Mullaperiyar issue


The cartoonists from Kerala conducted a campaign on the Mullaperiyar issue at Kollam. The event was organised by the Kerala Cartoon Academy jointly with the Kollam Press Club. They have also started a blog to exhibit the cartoons on Mullaperiyar. Read more below.

Mullaperiyar Cartoons
All fields of Kerala are now reflecting a single issue. It is none other than the Mullaperiyar dam issue. In addition to film workers, writers, journalists now it's the cartoonists who jumped in the bandwagon now. In the light of the imbroglio, most of the senior cartoonists in the Kerala state joined hands to express their views on the subject in their own ways. Urging the governments and authorities to make a solution as fast as possible, they sketched their views on the matter on a white canvas using Indian Ink. The programme took place on monday, near the Kollam Press Club.

The event was organised by the Kerala Cartoon Academy in association with the Kollam Press Club. The programme saw the active participation of prominent cartoonists in the state like Sukumar, MM Monai, PV Krishnan, Peter, Sudheer Nath, Surendran Vazhachal and Nathan. Also Kerala Cartoon Academy Chairman Prasannan Anikkad and Secretary B Sanjeev did the cartoons. The public also had the oppurtunity to do the cartoons on the subject.

It is not the first time the Cartoon Academy initiated a campaign like this. Earlier, they had conducted a similar campaign for the banning of Endosulfan. It was widely praised and generated around Rs. 50,000. The money was later handed over to the Relief Fund of the Chief Minister. The Academy had also organised another campaign for the welfare activities of children suffering from Cancer. It also recieved accolades.

The entry of cartoonists and other media have given the issue a new dimension. It is becoming more hot now. The Cartoon Academy members have also founded a blog dedicated to the cartoons on Mullaperiyar affair. The blog address is www.damtoons.blogspot.com. All the cartoons regarding the issue can be viewed on the site. They can also be employed for the protest programmes and campaigns related to the dam free of royalty.

The Kerala Cartoon Academy is the only organisation of its kind in the country. Founded in 1982, it has a membership of more than 100 cartoonists. It also gets a small amount from the government as grant.
