Sasthamcotta - A pilgrimage and tourist place in Kollam


Sasthamcotta is a small town in one of the southern district of Kerala, India. It is a place filled with natural beauty. The place is know for pilgrimage attractions too. Everyone should visit this beautiful place at-least once in their life time.

Sasthamcotta is a small town in Kollam district of Kerala. It is famous for having the only fresh water lake in Kerala. Sasthamcotta is a beautiful place and is a perfect tourist place for people who have a liking towards water bodies and nature. The place got its name from a famous temple there called the "Sasthamcotta Sree Dharmashastah Temple". The word "Sasthamcotta" means, the place where "Sasthav" lives. "Sasthav" means a Hindu Lord, Ayappa.

Importance of Sasthamcotta


People used to do "bali dharpapn" on the new moon day of the month Karkkidaka(Aadi month) for their forefathers on the banks of Sasthamcotta lake. Many Malayalam serials and cinemas have been shoot in the nearby locations. Sasthamcotta lake, the fresh water lake has been providing drinking water for most of the residents there for years.

Sasthamcotta Sree Dharmashastah Temple
This place is filled with monkeys, even inside the temple we can find monkeys which are really harmless but the moneys seen outside the temple are called "chandha kurangs"(market monkeys) and can harm the visitors and devotees. The temple is an old temple with nalukettu and ambala kulam.

Bharanikavu Devi Temple
This temple is a medium sized temple on the road side with a Devi idol there. Utsav is the main festival there.

Muthupilakkadu Parthasarathy TempleThis is another nearest temple to sasthamcotta. Lord Krishna is worshiped here and the favorite offering made to God to please him is "paal payasam"(a sweet dish made of milk and rice). The story behind this temple is that once a lady came there and was trying to sharpen her sickle on a rock and suddenly blood was flowing from that rock. Thus they called the crowd and finally they got a astrologer there and he said it is an idol of Lord Krishna and it has to be placed here and should be worshiped for the good of mankind. That is how this temple was formed.

St. Thomas Church, Sasthamcotta It is a catholic church and is called South Malayattoor.

Mayyathunkara Juma Masjid It is a Muslim pilgrimage located at the Sasthamcotta junction itself.

As the lake is at the heart of the city, tourists can reach there by rail, road, air or by sea.
