Kovalam is one of the well beaches as well as the tourist spots of India. Kovalam is located in the downtown area, at about 13 kilometers from the Thiruvananthapuram the capital city of Kerala of India.

History of the Kovalam Beach

Kovalam was found by the Maharajah of Travancore, as the tourist destination for his British guests in 1930's, but it started getting famous only in the 1970's. Then started the transformation of the small fisshing village in to a beautiful place and well known tourist destination.

Kovalam is a crescent shaped beach with shallow waters stretching for hundreds of meters which are ideal for swimming and playing. The beaches in the area are separated by rocks and have palm covered lands. The sands of the beach are somewhat blackish in colour, which is said to be, because of the presence of the ilmenite or the Thorazite.

Places to visit in and around the Kovalam Beach

Light House beach is the largest of all in which the Light House stands tall at 35 meters which is located atop Kurumkal hillock.
Hawah Beach is the next largest and the name was derived from the topless european women who used to throng there in the earlier days. Now topless bathing is banned in the area.
Ashoka Beach is also a part of the Kovalam beach area.
Samudra beach is a quiet one on the northern parts of Kovalam. There is a large promontory separating the north from the south parts of the beach. Only fishing goes on in the Samudra Beach as the local fisherman ply their trade.

Best Season to visit Kovalam Beach

September to may is the tourist season for Kovalam tourists. You can find many beach resortsin and around Kovalam. Earlier Kovalam was known for the hippies but now it is getting famous for the Ayurvedic salons and treaments, recuperation and regeneration resorts.

How to Reach Kovalam Beach

You have to reach Thiruvananthapuram airport . railway station first through well connected flights and trains.
Since Thiruvananthapuram is one of the important cities, it is well connected with the rest of the cities of India.
After you reach the Airport or the railway station you can hire vehicles cabs, autos or buses and reach the Kovalam Beach.
