The Greatest One-Day International (ODI) Ever Played
To mark the 40th anniversary of One-Day International cricket, the International Cricket Committee (ICC) had conducted a poll to choose the greatest ODI match played ever. Cricket fans were allowed to make their choices through votes cast on ICC's website or via Facebook or Twitter. The choice had to be made from 10 memorable matches suggested by the ICC.
The voting took place between 22nd December and 2nd January. The best match, according to fans, was the one played at Johannesburg's famous Wanderers Stadium in March 2006 between South Africa and Australia. In this match that witnessed downpour of runs, Australia made 434-4 in stipulated 50 overs, with captain Ricky Ponting scoring 164 off 105 balls.
But not all was lost for South Africa. Though SA had a disastrous start with one wicket lost for a mere 3 runs, remarkable power play by Herschelle Gibbs (175 off 111), Graeme Smith (90 off 55), ), Mark Boucher (50 not out) and Johan van der Wath (35) came up with an impossible-looking total of 438 with nine wickets down and one ball remaining. This was a momentous match in the history of one-dayers. Match Details
