Thrissur Pooram, the biggest among the poorams in Kerala is a memorable event which would invite millions of people from around the different parts of the state and also foreigners who wish to watch the program live. Being attached to the soul of people in Thrissur, Thrissur Pooram directly has influenced various other festivals too. Every year a huge congregation of people would gather at Thrissur for witnessing the pooram festival. In 2012 Thrissur Pooram will be celebrated on 1st May. The Thrissur pooram will have the support of people living nearby neighbourhood and towns. The main attraction of this day would be the large collection of elephants adorned with nettipattam (decorative golden headdress). This 36 hours nonstop festival has enhanced the tourism prospects in Kerala. On the pooram day more than fifty elephants will pass through the Vadakkunnathan Temple festooned with various ornaments and decorative bells, followed by Panchavadyam beaten in rhythmic style. The main attraction of this day will be the display of fireworks which will continue for hours.

As per historical evidences, the tradition of celebrating Thrissur Pooram has been started around 200 years ago. It was in 1978, Shakthan Thampuran who initiated a day to celebrate the pooram festival. He unified 10 temples near to Vadakkunnathan temple and organized the Thrissur Pooram as a mass festival. The king organized the temples into two groups; Western and Easter group. The western group was led by Thiruvanbady while the eastern group had the leadership of Parmekkavu. On this auspicious occasion, processions from Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple and Paramekkavu temple will reach the Vadukkunnathan Temple.



After the initial rituals, there would be hours of wonderful parasol displays and firework shows. The fireworks will start in the early morning which will continue for 3 to 4 hours. Both Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi groups will be standing on two sides face to face having fifteen elephants on each side. Then both would be displaying the most attractive and colourful parasols chance by chance.
