A.K Balan is a politician and the current Minister for Welfare of Backward and Scheduled Communities and Electricity in Kerala. By profession and educational qualification, A.K Balan is an advocate with a degree in B.A and L.L.B. He is a committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) - CPI (M). From 2006, he has been representing Kozhalmannam constituency in Palakkad district of Kerala.

A.K Balan's father's name is Shri. Kelappan and mother's name is Smt Kunhi. He is originally from the town of Nadapuram in Calicut. He obtained his B.A degree from Brennen College, Thalassery. He has also achieved a degree in L.L.B and became an advocate. Balan became active in politics through his school years through the Students Federation of India (SFI). At that time, he was the president and secretary of Kerala State Committee of SFI. Balan has a short criminal record for his imprisonment for 30 days in Kannur Central jail while taking part in the 'Land Agitation' movement. In 1980, he entered the Lok Sabha through an election from Ottapalam district. Later in 2001, he was accepted in the Kerala Legislative Assembly through the Kozhalmannam constituency. He has written few articles in magazines and newspaper dailies.
