UDF Government in Kerala-A Good Starting


Read about the 2011 UDF Government in Kerala.The people of Kerala elected the 13th Government. The new Government took charge on the 17th of May, 2011 by swearing in of a group of 7 ministers including the Chief Minister. Immediately on taking charge, the new government has taken some good decisions. Few of the same are mentioned below. Taking decisions alone are not anything. Implementations of the same are important. Let us hope the Government is as serious as the idea behind the decisions is.

Petrol price hike: Just before the new Government took charge in Kerala, the petroleum Companies raised the price of the petrol by about Rs 5.39 with effect from 15-05-2011. One of the decisions of the 1st Cabinet meeting of the new Government is to cancel the sales tax on the increase. The effect of the same is a reduction in the petrol price by Rs. 1.22. This is a small relief to the people of Kerala from the new government.

Endosulfan Sufferers: The earlier pro poor Government made lot of noise on endosulfan effects and even went to S C through one of their front political organisations, all the while blaming the congress led Government at the Center. The new Government in its 1st Cabinet meeting decided to give some good relief to the Endosulfan victims of Kasargod District. The government decided to enhance the compensation immediately to Rs 1 Lakh from the previous government's decision of Rs 50,000/-. As per the details available 486 persons died up to 2008. The details of the persons died after that, if any will be found. The previous government of Achuthanandan has helped families of only 178 deceased persons. These families who got the benefit of Rs 50,000/- will get the balance of 50,000/- and the remaining families of the 308 will be given the total amount of 1 Lakh. The government has also decided to enhance the compensation to 5 Lakhs as per the recommendations of the human rights commission and has represented to the center for help for this.
A panel of specialist doctors is being set up to assess the extent of disability of those who are alive but who may be suffering the effects of the Endosulfan. The government will also find out as to whether any other districts are having the adverse effects. The medical treatment facilities are expected to be increased for the affected. In order to make a comprehensive package a high level meeting is expected to be held in Thiruvananthapuram. Steps will be effected to prevent bringing from other states and use of Endosulfan in Kerala.

Damage due to unseasonal Rains: Another decision is on damage to crops due to unexpected rains in summer. Those who suffered will be paid Rs 20,000/- per hectare. The partial damages will be assessed through the collectors of the districts concerned.

Central Aid Package Implementation: The CM has decided to form a cell in his office to monitor the Central projects and the implementation of the same.

Other Decisions:

Review of all new appointments from January 2011 and controversial decisions taken by the previous government to find out lapses, if any.

Implementation of election manifesto of giving rice at Re 1/- per kg is expected to start from Onam time as an onam gift to people.

The Government decided to request the PSC to extend its time limit of the rank list by 6 months.

Pension for unmarried Aadivaasi mothers will be enhanced from 300/- to 1,000/- in addition to the grant of 1 acre land. A rehabilitation package is being worked out for them.

The cabinet decided to implement Malayalam as the 1st language from this academic year.

The cabinet decided to issue unified identity card with details of the individuals to all within one year in all the 14 districts. For this extra fund is allocated. Those who are from B P L will be given Rs 150/- per family to compensate for the leave in this connection.
