Issue of water security and Kerala situation
When we talk about construction of new buildings the issue of water conservation and availability are always overlooked. People are filling water stored areas such as river sides or lake sides and the buildings are constructed there. Encroachment of lakes and small islands inside lakes like Vembanad lake have become a regular affair. Legal actions already in progress against such constructions in Ernakulam and Alleppy districts.Even the Hon'ble Kerala High Court has issued notice to certain agencies to demolish some eighty resorts built in an island, the area of the island used for these constructions has doubled by illegal encroachment. Several such problems are there.

Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishath - Glorious 50 years
In Kerala the backwaters and rivers are richest as far as natural assets are considered. Thousands of people depend on these ecosystem for their existence. Vembanad lake is the largest lake of Kerala which serve innumerable living beings. Highest production of fish and prawns in this area of the world is mainly because of this lake.

But now the lake is continuously getting reduced in size and deteriorating in quality. Polluting the waters take place due to unscientific industrial activities. In the name of industries, residential purposes and resort constructions the lake gets filled up in thousands of hectares. Though there are rules which prevent constructions in the vicinity of lakes violation of these rules have become very common.

The socio-economic impacts of these actions are very serious and the affected people have moved for legal remedies. These issues have attracted the attention of Sastrasahitya parishat and it has appointed a People's Commission to study the issues and prepare a report suggesting remedies.

The Commission is chaired by Prof. Prbhath Patnaik, one of known Economist of the time. The work of the Commission is progressing and is expected to submit its report this year itself.

Rain water, a major natural resource of Kerala
Even after celebrating days as special for water, earth, environment, etc. majority are least concerned about the conservation of these natural resources. Water is coming on earth mainly through rain. Kerala is relatively getting more rain, 3000 mm. of rain on an average per annum. But unfortunately the conservation part of these water is neglected by all. The methods of conserving naturally have been done away with due to human interference.

So in the nearest future we will be in danger. Our very existence on this earth will be in trouble. One cannot live without water more than three days.

Fisheries, a major traditional food sector of Kerala
A point which has to be discussed with the fish production of the State is the changes in the ecosystem due to which the production is getting reduced. Most of the changes are due to man made causes. A typical example is the Thanneermukkam bund near Cherthala in Alappuzha district. This bund actually affects the natural flow of water in the Vembanad lake. Several fish varieties especially the prawn/shrimp varieties need fresh water as well as salt water for its life cycle.
When a barrage is constructed the fresh water and brackish water are divided into two different compartments. This disallows the shrimp to travel from one place to the other causing negatively their natural living condition. Definitely its production get reduced. Survey results have established this.

P.C. Chacko Member of Parliament (M P) Kerala – Profile and Biography
As per the latest news P.C.Chacko is to become the candidate of Chalakkudi Lok sabha constituency. The sitting M.P. of Chalakkudi, Mr.Dhanapalan, is shifting to Thrissur, where P.C.Chako is the sitting MP.
By the by I have a doubt regarding the college where PC Chacko did her graduation. Is it not the University College of Trivandrum? I used to see him in the University Hostel, where students from University college and University departments were staying, at Palayam during those days (I was an inmate of that Hostel during those days, as PG student).

Ayurveda system of medicine and Kerala's contribution
In Ayurveda 'kashaya' is a type of liquid medicine, a tonic, to be consumed sometimes after diluting or after mixing with a thailam or a pill. This kashayam was asked to be prepared at home in a particular manner (in a small round pot made of mud) in hearths with wood burned fire. Everyday this has to be prepared, depending on the prescription. But now a days Kashaya is directly purchased from Ayurveda medical shops. That means ready made kashaya is available. It is prepared and kept in bottles tightly closed after adding certain harmless preservatives.
But everybody doubts whether this kashaya has the same effect as that prepared at home daily and used. Perhaps the modern life conditions call for this change.

Kunjunni Mash -Malayalam Poet
When I hear the name of Kunjunni Master, I remember the day on which he visited my home. It was on the birth anniversary day of the great poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai (11th of October), which year I don't remember. Kunjunni Master came to attend a Kavi Sammelanam (poets' meet). After the meeting and lunch he wanted to take rest. I brought him to mt house which is close by. He met my wife and children and had just a small talk. Then I took him to the bed room and he took rest. After about half an hour he came out and chatted with us. He placed both his hands on the head of my son and blessed him.I was very happy to see that since an old man, especially a teacher and a poet is blessing my son. After that he bid farewell to us and slowly walked out of the house. After that I could not meet him, and I read about his death from news papers.
Even now I carry the image of his blessing son in my mind.

Makaravilakku coincides with the Makara pongal. A light on the hill top far away from the temple where people gather is the main attraction of the day. Devotees believe it is from an unknown source, though it is known that the same is arranged by the Devaswam Board and the Forest authorities. However, it is the belief which attracts thousands.

Keraleeyan in and out of Kerala
In every society there good and bad people. Kerala people are of no exception. It is not fair to conclude that majority of Malayalees are not friendly within Kerala. Definitely, there are such unfriendly persons. But, if approached, majority are friendly and will extend a helping hand. They may not take initiative themselves, but they are ready to mingle with others. This opinion is based on personal experiences.

These days in most of the cities people stay closely. The local self Governments (Municipalities or Corporations)encourage the formation of 'Residents' Associations'. When initiatives are taken for such associations 99% of them join this and come forward with contributions (monthly contributions or annual) without any hesitation.

Such Residents' Associations take up common issues such as tarring the roads in that area or lighting the streets, or water related problems or waste related issues etc, with the Authorities and find solutions. Many members join in such common activities.

Occasional get together with entertainments or speeches etc. also attract many. In short co-operation comes forth if approached with an aim.

The maximum number of tourists are generally visiting Kerala during August- September months. It is the time when the South -West monsoon withdraws and the down pour of rain subsides. More over, this is the time when Keralites celebrate the famous Onam festival, historically.

As an agricultural land this celebration is said to be attached with the paddy harvest season of the first crop. There are other mythological stories attached with the Onam celebrations. However, all Malayalees in the world are joining in this celebrations, irrespective of religious or caste differences.
Now the State Government is taking the initiative to celebrate this period as Tourism week. Varieties of cultural programmes are organized as part of the celebrations.

Science a boon or a bane
Science is a boon, no doubt. Originally, scientific inventions were based on needs. It was meant for improving the status of society. Naturally, the human being had to fight the wild animals for their existence. This forced them to invent certain weapons. But later when the human beings themselves started fighting each other for food, wealth, land and other niceties they started using these weapons against their own communities.Better weapons also were developed for combating the enemy.
Later when new inventions came out and the products were found to be useful to the society, takers came to buy the inventors. Because this new group found it is income generating. There came the misuse of science. These groups became strong and they started dictating what should be invented and produced. Thus the same science which started for the betterment of the human society, started to work as detrimental to the interests of the majority.

High rate of suicide on State - VS Achuthanandan Concerned
High rate of suicide in Kerala is very often reported in media. Here, a doubt is there about the authenticity of the available statistics on this. In Kerala, because of high rate of literacy and education the net work of information is active. Any incident, like suicide, is not missed from reporting. In most other States, there is lack of communication, and the suicide is not reported as such. May be, reported only as death to avoid further related legal problems. Similarly, the victim being taken to hospitals when an attempt of suicide is doubted also will be more in Kerala, since the facilities are more. Hence an actual fact finding is required before coming to a conclusion.
